Spring term 1
This term our science topic has been ‘Materials’. We revisited the different stages of the water cycle before creating a mini version. We actually made it rain in the classroom!
We learned about the properties of solids, liquids and gases and investigated how some materials can change from one state to another and then back; however other changes are irreversible.
We also carried out lots of practical investigations, including finding the best thermal insulator and the most absorbent kind of kitchen towel. It wasn’t the one many of us predicted!
In RE we have learned about the different religious journeys and pilgrimages that people of different faiths take part in.
We had an amazing day with Dr Manny Barot, who came to share with us his experiences of life as an immigrant child growing up in this country. We learned about the abuse that he has suffered and also how his daughter, Miss Chloe, was bullied at school because of her hair. It made us really stop and think about how we treat other people who may be slightly different from us. Dr Manny also taught us about the importance of listening carefully. He is coming back in the summer term and we are really looking forward to seeing him again.
We also had a visit from Adrian Portianow, who came from Poland to live in Shirebrook. He has also been the subject of abuse and told us what it felt like to be called names and picked on at college. However he did not give in and he now works incredibly hard helping the police in our local area as a translator. He is hoping to become a paid member of the Police very soon. He made us think about how we treat new people in our local community.
